New Rules - Old Days

London's own New Rules has taken the music scene by storm with their latest hit 'Old Days.' The single quickly became BBC Radio 1's Best New Pop, receiving an outpouring of support from listeners. In celebration of this achievement, the band embarks on a nostalgic road trip, revisiting cherished locations close to their hearts.

Earlier this year, their track 'Not Alone' premiered on BBC Radio 1's Future Pop with Mollie King, further solidifying their presence in the industry. Their sold-out headline tours across the UK and Europe have left audiences in awe and earned them rave reviews — sharing stages with Little Mix and Julia Michaels.

Recognised for their raw talent and versatility, New Rules has become synonymous with mesmerising stripped-back acoustic performances. Their unforgettable session at London's prestigious Maida Vale Studios showcased their remarkable skills, including a cover of Lewis Capaldi's song here.

The trio spoke to SID for an exclusive interview:

SID: Can you tell us about the inspiration behind your latest single, ‘Old Days’, and how the song came to be?

NR: One of us went through a breakup and had the pleasure of bumping into their ex in town one night. The next day we wrote this all about how strange it can make you feel when you end on good terms but still lose your person.

SID: '‘Old Days’ explores the challenge of transitioning from lovers to friends. How did you approach capturing this emotional journey within the song?

NR: I think it’s very rare you find a case where two people end a romantic relationship and go back to how they were before it was romantic without anything being different. It’s just confusing where you go from there and i think no matter how much you long for what you had, it’s difficult to just forget everything you knew and felt about that person once you crossed that threshold.

SID: Your music often showcases heartfelt lyrics and relatable themes. How do you ensure that your songs resonate with listeners on a personal level?

NR: We just try to put as much of our personal experiences in. We’ll often leave out really niche weird details but even then sometimes we try to include themes and things that are oddly specific but universally applicable. Think that’s a Matty Healy quote there. He’s kind of the king of that.

SID: Could you share a memorable moment or experience from your recent headline tour dates in the UK and Ireland?

NR: We have a song called Late in the Evening that we tried to mess with the structure of but our fans had other ideas. We wanted to pause for a few bars but they just kept singing the chorus every night so they became the new rules choir in that moment. It’s pretty special seeing people own and feel one of your songs like that.

SID: As a band, you received praise for your energetic live performances. How do you manage to create such a dynamic and engaging atmosphere on stage?

NR: We all grew up playing for different audiences in pubs and on street corners but I think a different life was breathed into it the first time we ever played together. We’re actually best mates it’s not just pretend and I think that chemistry is the key to our performing. To stress it again, I think the biggest wind in our sails are our incredible fans who never fail to make us feel like the best band in the world. the shows would not be the same without them, and we love getting them to share their stories between songs, bouncing off whatever outrageous thing someone’s yelled up at us cause that’s what makes it memorable for us too

SID: What can the public expect from your upcoming music as you continue working on new material in London?

NR: More energy and fun. We’re finishing some songs at the moment that feel less overthought and more “if it feels good then put it out” and I think that’s important because those are the kinds of songs we have the most genuine love and ambition for. Also, we’re dying to get back on the road so we have a strict policy on releasing songs that are gonna go off the next time we tour.
