A Feast for the Eyes: Thom Browne Reveals Women's and Men's Couture Collection 2024
The collection celebrates toile as both the source text and the final garment, bringing to light the beauty and craftsmanship inherent in the work-in-progress stage. While couture is typically showcased in a polished, finished state, Browne's 2024 collection returns to its origins, honoring the initial steps of couture creations, with the use of muslin.
Different weights of muslin and horsehair canvas expose intricate layers of work, reflecting Thom Browne’s commitment to recontextualizing classic tailoring. Chest canvasing, usually hidden as an intermediate layer, is repurposed to create patterns and shades, while shape and structure are achieved through hand-basting muslin and canvas.
The collection is showcased in a greige muslin-dressed salon at the Musée des Arts Décoratifs, with a wall of muslin columns echoing the institution’s belle époque architecture. Under the glow of five luminescent spheres, spectators don custom muslin smocks, each personalized with their names in calligraphy on classic Thom Browne tags.
Key pieces include tailored sports coats, modular aprons, lace-back and pleated-front hourglass corsets, oversized cardigans made from muslin strips hand-stitched to metallic threads, a knife-pleated tennis skirt, and sheer trousers.
